Good question difficult to answer! Namely because it to thousands of different opinions and experiences to do so. Therefore, I can contribute at this point only my own:
Ten years ago, in the "tender age" of 52 years I started (!). And as with most others, it was initially a single spoiled me to drag over a few kilometers. Only this time I had more than 85kg, which I brought to the scales. However, some potential, as already In the autumn of 2000 I took first part in a half marathon I finishte with 2:04:05. Since I did not produce the body "model athlete" bin there are also natural limits with which I am quite happy in the meantime. In addition, a hobby runners usually pursues a profession and has a family.

If you have been overcome the "critical point" makes running addict, just like in my case. The annual volume would rise steadily and currently stands at about 2,200 KM. I also took part regularly in competitions, which are the icing on the cake. I think this is just part. For men, anyway! The countries ranged from 5K runs to cross Contests quarter, half and full marathon, with the unforgettable highlight New York !
From the classification produced, I consider me as serious amateur runners. And as such I take my time to go to three a week to run four times and to challenge several competitions. Was the weekly maximum 30KM earlier, I was in the previous year at 46km. In addition, it feels good after a busy day to tie the shoes to rotate your rounds. No matter what the weather and the time of day and season. The neighbors think I'm crazy anyway!

.. efficient, healthier and become more balanced?
.. the tendency to over-eating and escaped a fine drink?
.. scaled new heights in this profession?
No, no and no! "From patsch AGAINST dog to the marathon man " the article said after the NYC Marathon in a local newspaper and showed what is possible based on my person! A "late bloomer" and atrocious Turner will be the "flagship runners. And if many people say to me, "Running is not for me". So, just not, there are still so many other opportunities to do sports. But, it is (at least) worth a try. Do it! And before all - do it for you! Ten years of running experience and the pictures to argument should be enough! Or?
Photo 1: 2002 in my first marathon in Vienna. Overweight, "modern Outfit" and it seems as if I laboriously upward run. No, it was "live board"!
Photo 2: 2009 with the New York Marathon. Despite the, from the start accident injured his left knee in good shape. There are worlds in between!
